Phase I Habitat Surveys (or Preliminary Ecological Appraisals) can be carried out as a stand-alone survey or undertaken alongside other surveys, such as Preliminary Roost Assessments for bats or otter surveys. A Phase I Habitat Survey can include a data search (called an Extended Phase I Habitat Survey), carried out with the Local Records Center, Local Bat Group and online resources.
A Phase I Habitat Survey will be carried out in line with published guidelines (JNCC, 2010), recording habitats and features of ecological interest. The information gathered will be used to assess impacts on habitats and wildlife from development proposals.
A Phase I Habitat Survey is often requested by Local Planning Authorities where biodiversity is likely to be affected.
